Over 135,000 Lagos Residents Living With HIV...LASG

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that more than 135,000 people in the state are currently living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), underscoring the ongoing public health challenge facing Nigeria’s most populous city.

This revelation was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, who emphasized the importance of sustained public awareness, regular testing, and access to treatment to curb the spread of the virus.

While acknowledging progress in HIV care and support, the commissioner warned that complacency remains a threat to the state’s long-term efforts to reduce infection rates and eliminate stigma.

Lagos, as the nation’s commercial and urban hub, continues to carry a significant portion of Nigeria’s HIV burden. Experts believe that addressing the issue requires a multifaceted approach — including education, prevention, and access to affordable healthcare services.

The state government says it remains committed to scaling up testing centers, increasing the availability of antiretroviral drugs, and partnering with both local and international organizations to tackle the epidemic.

“We want every Lagosian to know their status,” the commissioner said, calling on residents to take advantage of free testing and treatment services available across the state.
