The Presidency unveiled landmark relief for commuters on Wednesday giving free ride to commuters on trains and reducing cost of inter-state travels by half.
Announcing the measures to cushion the effects of inflation on transport services, a presidential committee of ministers and special adviser on the intervention comprising Dr.Oladele Alake, (Solid Minerals), Said Alkali, (Transportation), Muhammed Idris (Information & National Orientation) and Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Media said commuters can ride free by train from Friday December 21 till January 4, 2024.
According to them, the logistics for the intervention in transport fares that will cover 22 high traffic highways across the country begin tomorrow.
Addressing the press, Dr.Alake, who chairs the inter-ministerial Committee on subsidised inter-state yuletide transport assured Nigerians that all hands were on deck to execute the relief to reduce transport costs for hitch- free end of year celebrations.
Also speaking on the relief, Transportation Minister Dr.Alkali revealed that the government is working with the Luxury Buses Association of Nigeria to discount fares on the 22 routes reiterating that it shall take effect tomorrow.
In the last two days, Dr. Alake has hosted several meetings with fellow ministers, including the Minister of Interior, Hon.Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to brainstorm and work out the relief plan.
