The body of an unidentified adult male, who drowned while riding on a jet ski at the Lekki-Ikoyi inland waterways in Lagos State on Wednesday has been recovered.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said that the body was discovered by local divers on Friday morning.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, had in a statement on Wednesday, disclosed that the victim drowned as a result of speeding, adding that the body had sunk too deep to be rescued.
Emmanuel, however, said the local divers contacted emergency responders immediately after the body was found.
He said, “Emergency responders found the body on Friday morning with the help of locals in the area. When the locals saw the body, they informed us and we went there to identify and recover it. It has been handed over to the marine police.”
The LASWA boss said the identity of the deceased was not ascertained before it was taken to the marine police.
He said, “We did not have the details of the victim before we gave the body to the marine police. They (the police) will carry out an investigation on his identity.”
However, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for a reaction, as calls made to his mobile phone were not responded to. He had yet to reply to a text message sent to him as of the time this report was filed.
