The Nigerian Communications Commission has ordered all
GSM providers to stop with immediate effect, the automatic renewal of
subscribers data plans without their concept.
This was part of the directive issued by the regulatory
body during an interaction with top Media Executives in Lagos Yesterday.
The Commission frowned at a situation where GSM
companies deduct money at source from subscribers when their initial data plans
finishes.
The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Commission Prof
Umar Garba Danbatta also used the occasion to enumerate some of the achievement
of the Agency especially in the area of broadband penetration.
When asked if subscribers of MTN are indirectly paying
for the multi billion Naira fine imposed on the telecom company by NCC, the
Commission said it is not true.
On the wide held belief that telecom masts and base
stations built within habitable areas pose serious dangers to health, Prof
Danbatta said investigation and analysis so far showed that it is not possible and that Nigerians have nothing to fear.
The EVC also spoke on the fate of embattled GSM Company
Etisalat and what awaits its over 22m subscribers.
The NCC said it is in talk with the CBN, Etisalat, the consortium
bank and Etisalat parent company in UAE as well as major shareholders in the
company to inject more funds into the company so as to meet its obligations to
the banks.
Prof Danbatta said the Quality of Service among service operators increased minimally in the past few months but it still fell short of the required standard
