The
Nigerian Slum / Informal Settlement Federation has demanded the official withdrawal of the
immediate eviction threat issued by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to all Lagos
waterfront communities on 9 October 2016.
Following
an emergency meeting of over 20 member communities that fear they may fall
among those threatened by the Governor's announcement, the attached open letter
was delivered to Governor Ambode this afternoon.
In
the letter , the Federation and its member communities announce
their intention to proceed for mass peaceful protest if the eviction threat is
not officially withdrawn by the evening of Wednesday, 12 October 2016.
Please
help us in publicizing this demand and the devastating human impacts that would
result should the Government proceed with its threatened demolition of all
waterfronts in Lagos, which are home to millions of law-abiding citizens.
Affected
communities are ready to welcome the media for visitation and are available for
interview upon request. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely
yours,
Megan
