Knights of the Order of Saint Mulumba in
collaboration with the Family and Human Life Unit, Catholic Archdiocese of
Lagos have concluded all arrangements to hold a reparation vigil on abortion.
Metropolitan
Grand Knight, Lagos Metropolitan Council of the Order, Dr. Charles Mbelede
addressing a press conference in Lagos said the programme holding September 16,
2016 at the Church of Transfiguration, Lekki, is to reiterate the stand of the
Catholic Church on Zero tolerance on abortion. According to him, the vigil
which forms part of the Order’s Pro-life activities is coming at the same time
as the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Abortion,
he said refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally
spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or
chemical abortion.
“Abortion
ends a pregnancy by destroying and removing the developing child. According to
medical experts, a baby’s heart is noticeable by 6 weeks and during the seventh
through the tenth weeks, when the majority of abortions are performed, fingers
and genitals appear and the child’s face is recognizably human. Abortion is
pure murder” he said.
Dr.
Mbelede laying emphasis on the evils of abortion reechoed the words of Saint
(Mother) Teresa who said, “the greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of
the innocent unborn child. For if a mother can murder her own child in her
womb, what is left for you and for me to kill each other?”
He
listed the risks associated with abortion to include; pelvic infection, blood
clots in the uterus, heavy bleeding, cut or torn cervix and anesthesia related
complications.
He
also frowned on the use of contraceptives saying natural method is the only
option approved by the Catholic Church.
A
prolife consultant and representative of the President of Family Life Unit,
Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Dr. (Mrs.) Henrietta Williams in own comments
outlined the dangers of contraceptives and advised couples to go for natural
family planning methods.
She
stated that sex education that promotes spiritual and ethical values should be
taught at homes and schools and not the one that promotes moral moral laxity.
