Niger militants numbering over 100 yesterday stormed Akwa Ibom state
Government House, causing chaos in Uyo, the state capital.
The militants insisted on seeing Governor Udom Emmanuel over non payment of their monthly stipends and other amnesty allowances, saying that their counterparts in other states are being paid regularly.
The
militants began their protests from various streets and later blocked all
adjourning streets near the governor’s office along Wellington Bassey way in
the state capital.
It was observed that policemen were initially pacifying the militants to ease their blockade, but the militants on their part threatened to resort to violence if they don’t had no audience with the governor.
A detachment of the joint task force comprising military and police personnel later dispersed the militants.
When contacted, the Akwa Ibom state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Cordelia Nwawe, denied that the protesters were militants, saying that there were no militants in the state except some insignificant hoodlums trying to cause trouble.
