According
to a statement signed by the coordinator of the event, Tayo Adewusi, said we
came up with this theme “How Can Broadband Deployment Impact on Nigeria’s
Economic Recovery” because of the current trend of Nigeria’s economy and if
Nigeria’s economy must leap frog and “catch up with the rest of the world,
broadband deployment can take us there”.
He
posited that there is need for an increase in broadband penetration and after
oil and gas, ICT is it. We have done poorly in broadband penetration because
the undersea international cable presently at our shores with over 10
Tetrabytes per second (TBS), which include, SAT-3, Main One, GLO 1 among others
have brought a glut in fibre capacity.
The
challenge is how to transport the huge capacity inland.
Adewusi
said that there is an obvious absence of efficient distribution and dearth of
last mile connection.
However,
there has been an appreciable growth in e-commerce and this can be properly
harnessed through a significant broadband penetration.”
Nigeria’s
economy is dependent on an efficient broadband deployment and this goldmine
would happen through the provision of the “enabling environment”, he insists
that broadband deployment should be predicated on “availability, affordability and
quality of service delivery”.
