A former military leader, retired
General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday appealed to all Nigerians to give the
Buhari administration the necessary support to overcome all the current
challenges.
General Abubakar, who handed over leadership of the country to the democratically elected government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, met President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja behind closed-doors.
He
later told State House correspondents after the meeting that he was at the
Presidential Villa to discuss national and global issues with the president. He
did not give details.
“I came to discuss issues of national interest and international affairs with the president. Both of them are interwoven. I have discussed with the person I came to see and I don’t think I need to discuss it in the news media," he said.
Abubakar, who chaired the National Peace Committee for the 2015 General Elections, said the committee was still working, though silently, to ensure peace in the country.
Abubakar described the crisis in the Niger Delta as unnecessary and uncalled for.
