Following the loss of lives of about 5000 Nigerians in road
crashes resulting from tyre bursts since 2010 till date, the Federal Road
Safety Corps has resolved to intensify its sensitization and education
programmes to ban the use of food-based and substandard sealing pastes mostly
used by vulcanizers to fix tyres across the country.
In a statement, the Head Media Relations and Strategy of the
Corps, Bisi Kazeem, stated that Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi’s interest to
intensify the sensitization and enforcement campaign in the above-stated areas
is further reinforced by the House of Representatives’ Resolution (HR.65/2016)
to curb the influx of substandard tyres, non-lubricant rims and fake tyre
sealing pastes, as well as the use of food-based products on tyres by
vulcanizers
According to him, the Corps Marshal has stressed that Vulcanizers
are culpable for the ways and manners they improperly handle tyres during
repairs, and added that the dangerous practice of engaging fake sealing pastes
is capable of causing rusts on new rims, as well as wears on new and standard
tyres.
He has in the past met with Vulcanizers’ Association to intimate
them of their inappropriate and dangerous conducts.
