The
acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science
Council of Nigeria, Mrs. Olufunke Omotuyi
has been assassinated in Abuja.
It was learnt that the
MLSCN boss was stabbed in the neck and in the chest by the assailants at about
4am on Wednesday.
It
was gathered that Omotuyi, who was due for retirement from the council in two
months, was attacked and killed in her residence in the Apo area of
Abuja.
The
killing was reported at the Durumi Police Division and at the Zone 7 Police
Command in Abuja.
The
National Public Relations Officer of the Association of Medical Laboratory
Scientists of Nigeria, Adeyeye Tam, who confirmed the death, said the MLSCN
boss was preparing to attend an international summit.
He
said, “It is confirmed that the acting Registrar and CEO of the MLSCN, Mrs.
Olufunke Omotuyi, was killed in the early hours of Wednesday at her residence
in Abuja.
“It
is shocking. I am on my way to her apartment. I cannot say much about it now.”
A
worker with the MLSCN, Abuja, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Omotuyi
lived alone in the apartment.
She
said, “The news has thrown all Nigerian medical laboratory scientists into
mourning. The CEO was stabbed in the neck and in the chest. She was in her 60s
because she was supposed to retire in two months’ time. She did not live in the
apartment with her children and her husband.
Her husband is a senior pastor in
an Anglican church in Lagos.”
Another
official with the MLSCN, who identified himself only as Wale, said, “I was
supposed to go to her place for some official accreditation. But it was
cancelled because she was attacked.
When
I got to the MLSCN headquarters, it was confirmed that she was not only
attacked, she had also been stabbed to death. I have not been to her
apartment, but the corpse has been deposited in a morgue.
“The
Area Commander, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and a Deputy Commissioner
of Police came to our office today to verify the report and it was confirmed to
them. They have taken over the investigation.”
It
was learnt that an autopsy had also been conducted on the deceased.
