The African Women in Leadership
Organization(AWLO) , an energetic non-profit organization championing the cause
of women empowerment, gender parity, and the advancement of women in leadership
has concluded plans to host its annual Global Conference in Virgina, USA
According to AWLO Founder, Hon.
Elisha Attai, the conference tagged “AWLO Washington 2016” would unfold at the
Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City. It will provide an opportunity to harness and
enhance leadership potentials of women and channel these into promoting the
unity and development of the Africans and
Africans in Diaspora. Furthermore, various speakers will havea veritable
platform to share their stories, engage and inspire other women in
a convivial atmosphere.
Speaking
during a media Parley in Lagos, Hon. Attai noted that the conference slated for
August 16th- 21st will feature such speakers as Mrs. FolorunshoAlakija -Keynote Speaker (Nigeria ), Mrs. AngelleKwemo - Founder/Chair at Believe
in Africa Washington DC (Cameroon), Mrs. Eveline Pierre - Founder, 1st Haitian
Heritage Museum (Haiti), Mr. Jeffrey O -
Motivational Speaker/Executive Coach (Dallas/Nigeria ), Ms. Phanice Kwamboka - CEO of Eye on Africa
(Kenya), Dr. Almas Jiwani - UN women
President Canada (Canada ) and HRH Princess MoradeunOgunlana - Founder, African
Women Health Project Texas, USA (Nigeria).
He also stated that the high point
of the event which has its theme as “We’ve Got Power” would be the Summit of
the Next Generation which has been specifically designed for preparing youths
for better performance in leadership. Resource persons during this session will
be inspirational women who will help equip participants with intellectually-stimulating
tools that would certainly redirect their energies and bail the continent out
of the quagmire of poverty, corruption, insecurity and political crises. In
addition, there would be an AWLO Distinction Awards where women of various
spheres who have demonstrated sterling achievement in business, commitment to
the course of women and leadership would be honoured.
He also used the opportunity to
reveal that AWLO since its inception in 2009 now has various State Chapters in
Nigeria and Country Chapters scattered across the globe, he noted that the idea
of setting up chapters was to ensure that the message of the organization
trickles down to the women at the grassroots and also positively impact their
lives.
Also speaking at the occasion, Dr.
Violet Arene, AWLO Global Youth Matron Matron noted that the organization is
that has an holistic approach to issues affecting women from the cradle to the
family, adolescence to adulthood.
She spoke passionately about the ilead project that was launched in
AkwaIbom State, which would be replicated across the country, the project of
empowerment going on in Rivers State, where ordinary women are being financed
and provided branded stalls for their petty business, the just concluded free
digital training for 150 women by the Lagos Chapter in collaboration with
Google and the educational intervention to inhabitants of two IDP Camps in
Abuja.
Dr. Arene revealed AWLO’s unique
project, 1Mother1Child initiative. According
to her, this is a project that portrays the African woman as also a social
mother by adopting a hapless child and seeing that child through his or
her education. It is a project that speaks volumes for the heart of the African
woman as a leader.
On this project, Hon. Attai added
“This is one project close to our heart. It is mandatory for all full members
of AWLO to adopt and train one child that is not theirs biologically. We will
encourage more Nigerians and corporate bodies to join us in this noble cause”
AWLO is a non-profit
organisation with a membership of women leaders from all walks of life across
the African continent. It envisions a continent in which women take their
rightful place as home and nation builders with equal opportunities and equal
access in all areas of existence, the organisation works with African nations
and Global partners.
It is a
cohesive inclusive organisation driven by a membership of dynamic women of
worth! The annual conference provides a platform for women from all walks of
life within the African continent and in the Diaspora to come together to
further advance the status of women.
