State Government has revealed that it saves an estimated amount of Four hundred
and Seventy-Seven Million, five hundred and eleven thousand, eight hundred and
fifty – one naira (477,511,851.00) annually on pension payments.
This
revelation emanated from the recent screening exercise conducted by the Office
of the State Auditor General across the State,
The
acting Auditor –General, Pastor Babajide Olubanjo in an interview with pressmen
pointed out that the screening exercise had afforded Government the opportunity
to detect the actual number of pensioners in the State and of those that are
now deceased.
“The
payment of the sum of N554,753.27 comprising the monthly pensions of late
pensioners from the payroll of the respective Treasury cash offices would
be stopped immediately” Olubanjo added.
Olubanjo
disclosed that the screening exercise conducted for all pensioners on the State
payroll in all the eight (8) Treasury Cash offices, revealed that a total of
two thousand, five hundred and Sixty (2560) pensioners did not show up for the
exercise as at 22nd March, 2016 as a result, a total of
N39,792,654,25 was estimated to be saved monthly in respect of the unscreened
pensioners.
The
screening team suggested that Government should allow it extend the exercise to
health workers as well as the teaching staff in the State to further block more
leakages in Government’s expenditure.
He
appreciated the State Governor for the opportunity given to his office to
conduct the verification exercise, advising the State Government to allow the
exercise to be carried out bi-annually.
