Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has said that the establishment of
the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo was the state’s strategic
response to reverse the brain drain in Nigeria’s medical industry.
He added that the institution would also create an institutional base for the production of proficient health care manpower to service the nation.
He added that the institution would also create an institutional base for the production of proficient health care manpower to service the nation.
Mimiko said this weekend at the inauguration and first matriculation of
the institution in Ondo.
The university is the first specialized medical
university in Nigeria and the second in Africa. Mimiko said dearth of
well-trained professionals in the medical industry has been the bane of
qualitative, efficient and sustainable health care delivery systems in Africa.
According to Mimiko, the scenario was more compounded by the exodus of
many competent doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other professionals, who in
search of better training and working conditions, have moved overseas, thereby
making the WHO Health Care Professional-Patient ratio unachievable.
Dr Mimiko said it is estimated that about 30,000 Nigerians spend over
N250 billion on medical tourism annually. He said with the establishment of the
university, the state had been able to allay the concerns of all our key local
and international partners about the sustainability of Abiye Safe Motherhood
programme and other game-changing initiatives.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Friday Okunofua, a
Professor of Gynaecology and former Provost of the College of Medicine,
University of Benin, disclosed that 234 students were matriculated into the
five courses accredited by the Nigerian University Commission, NUC.
He therefore assured of his commitment to achieving the best
international benchmarks for the university.
