The Governor of Anambra state, Dr Willie Obiano has
restated the commitment of the state government to issues of road safety,
saying his administration is committed to supporting the FRSC to accomplish its
goals of creating safer road environment in the country.
According to Bisi Kazeem, Head Media Relations and
Strategy, the Governor stated this on Wednesday when he met with the Corps
Marshal of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi at the Government House Awka. According to the
Governor, his administration will continue to collaborate with the FRSC in its
determination to rid the state of all practices that undermine safety of lives
and property of people on the road, noting that with the establishment of the
State Traffic Management Agency, the excesses of some motorists who are in the
habit of violating traffic rules and regulations with impunity would be
curtailed.
While commending the personnel of the FRSC in the
state for their immense contributions to the enhancement of socio-economic
activities of the state through its safer roads campaigns, the Governor
expressed dismay at the recent upsurge in the rate of road traffic crashes in
the state capital, particularly at the Immigration junction where a fatal crash
occurred recently claiming many lives.
“FRSC has been doing well in the state, and the
state government will continue to support it to perform better through
collaboration and provision of logistics,” he stated.
“That is why we have been sending the personnel of
our Traffic Management Agency to the FRSC Academy at Udi to be trained. We
would sustain the collaboration in other areas to ensure that every motorist in
the state understands the laws and operates within the limits of the
provisions, “ the Governor further stated.
On the fatal crashes occurring along the
Immigration junction in the state, Dr Willie urged the FRSC to take appropriate
actions that could address the menace, noting that with the construction work
going on in the state, especially at the state capital, there was the need for
motorists to exercise caution while driving through the highways. He added that
the state government will continue to take advantage of the FRSC Academy Udi to
train other personnel of the state Traffic Management Agency for training on
effective traffic management and administration in the state.
Oyeyemi who visited the location of the crash-prone
area at the Immigration junction in the state capital following the alarm
raised by the Governor directed immediate conduct of safety impact assessment
by the Corps Safety Engineering of the FRSC to determine the causes and
solutions to the crashes. The Corps Marshal further directed that as part of
the immediate measures, the Anambra state Sector Command will commence
immediate surveillance patrol around the area and ensure that a patrol vehicle
is deployed there in the evening to warn vehicles approaching the junction.
Oyeyemi also directed that adequate traffic signs
be mounted in other locations of the state where construction works are going
to avoid motorists running into the construction workers on duty.
It would be recalled that Anambra state is one of
the states in the Federation with own State Traffic Management Agency whose
personnel engage in urban traffic management to complement the efforts of the
FRSC which is the lead agency for road traffic management and administration in
the country. its personnel have therefore, been trained in batches at the FRSC
Academy Udi and Training School Jos.
