Ihedioha and Rochas |
Former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 governorship polls in Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha has described the decision of Governor Rochas Okorocha to scrap 19 parastatals as “reckless” and “lacking in economic sense.”
Ihedioha, who spoke through his media aide, Mr. Chibuike Onyeukwu yesterday, noted that the action of the governor smacked of lack of imagination on how to resuscitate the state’s ailing economy, adding that the sacking of over 3,000 workers would further compound the economic miseries of the families of those affected and increase insecurity in the state.
“There is no doubt that the Nigerian economy is on the downturn as a result of dwindling oil revenue but the solution is not the arbitrary sacking of workers and scrapping of key parastatals such as the Hospitals Management Board, Imo Water Corporation, Imo State Investment Protection Agency, Agricultural Development Programme (ADP), Imo Palm Plantation (Adapalm), Imo Consumer Protection Agency, Imo Sports Council, etc.”
“Having anchored his second term election campaign on the mantra of job, industry, factory and employment, Imo people have looked forward to more employment opportunities and improved working conditions instead of mass sack of workers in the new year,” he said.
The former federal legislator pointed out the mass sack of workers by the Okorocha-led administration cannot address the economic woes of the state which he said was a direct consequence of the mismanagement of the resources of the state by the same administration.
“ I have been vindicated today by my earlier warnings that the economy of the state is being mismanaged and that the state is quickly sliding into a failed state as a result of lack of properly thought-out economic programmes and good governance. It is worrisome that Imo State, as an oil producing state with prospects in tourism and agriculture, has the highest number of unemployed graduates in the South East and instead of creating jobs, the governor is sacking.”
He adding: “With the recent mass sack of workers, does it mean that there is nothing to expect from the governor’s many foreign trips to woo investors? How many foreign direct investment has the government attracted to the state in the last four years?”
Ihedioha urged Okorocha to reconsider his many foreign trips in order to save tax payers’ money.
