Lai Mohammed |
He said this in Abuja on Monday at the commencement of the National Sensitization Campaign Against Corruption while addressing media bureau chiefs. He appealed to the media to help in sensitizing Nigerians against corruption like it did with the fight against Insurgency.
He said between 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of N1.34trillion in Nigeria, an amount that is more than a quarter of the 2015 national budget. ''Out of the stolen funds, 15 former Governors allegedly stole N146.84billion; four former ministers allegedly stole N7 billion; 12 former Public Servants, both at federal and state levels, allegedly stole over N14 billion; eight people in the Banking Industry allegedly stole N524 billion while 11 businessmen allegedly stole N653billion," the minister said.
He called on the media to highlight the damage corruption has done to the nation, warning that unless Nigeria kills corruption, the vice is capable of killing Nigeria. He however failed to name the individuals that allegedly embezzled the total sum of N1.3 trillion.

They should name the 55 Nigerians. It is not enough to tell us that 55 individuals stole #1.3 trillion. What's their identities?
