BOY ARRESTED AFTER KILLING FOUR IN TEXAS AND FLEEING TO MEXICO WHILE ON PROBATION

A teenager who avoided jail for killing four people after a Texas court heard about his privileged upbringing has been detained in Mexico after apparently violating his probation and fleeing the country.

Ethan Couch, from Texas, avoided a prison sentence after his lawyers said he was suffering from "affluenza" - where his financial privilege made him unable to understand the consequences of his actions.

The 18-year-old had crashed his pickup into a group of pedestrians and another vehicle in 2013, leaving four dead and several seriously injured.

He was nearly three times over the legal limit.

Prosecutors had sought a 20-year prison sentence, but judges handed him a surprise sentence of mental-health treatment and a decade of probation.

The leniency shocked many Americans, especially because the teen expressed no remorse and did not spend a single night behind bars.

The "affluenza" defence shocked America and made international headlines.

Couch was arrested with his mother Tonya in the Pacific resort city of Puerto Vallarta on Monday.

The Tarrant County sheriff in Fort Worth, Texas, said he thought they fled across the border in late November after video emerged appearing to show Couch at a party involving alcohol and playing a game called "beer pong".

Police showed up at his home to find it empty with no forwarding address and an arrest warrant and photo of the teen were issued.

Couch could go to prison for up to 10 years if he is found to have violated his probation by drinking alcohol.
