The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, charged new lawyers who were called to the Bar on Tuesday and Wednesday to embrace the ethics and decorum expected of members of the legal profession wherever they find themselves.
The CJN, who spoke at the closing of the two-day call to the bar ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, urged the new lawyers to learn how to discern between right and wrong to enable them to speak the truth at all times and stand on the side of justice.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was represented by his wife, Dolapo, as the special guest of honour at the event, where a total of 3,277 successful new lawyers were called to the bar.
The CJN urged the new lawyers to always speak the truth and stand on the side of justice.
He said, “As ministers in the temple of justice, you must learn to discern between right and wrong, ethical and unethical so that you will stand on the side of justice by always speaking the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
“On this note, I will address the ethical part of the profession as embodied in the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners in Nigeria.”
He urged the new lawyers to ensure that the provisions of the rules were imprinted in their intellect.
The Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Mr. Olanrewaju Onadeko, presented the new wigs to the Body of Benchers, who was chaired by the CJN.
The Star Prize for First Class Students, donated by the director general, was won by Okwor Dominic, Edun Halimat Temitope, Uche Tracy, Okezie Ndubuisi, Amoo Oluwatobi Ayobode, Bandawa Antayi Anfani and Are Adejoke Kafayat.
