The Nigerian Police Force has lost 90,000 officers and men to insurgency, Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, said in Sokoto yesterday.
“Based on the figure I have in my disposal,we have 90,000 widows. So invariably, that can be translated to mean that we have lost about 90,000 officers and men since the commencement of the insurgency four years ago,” he said.
The Inspector General also promoted eight policemen who participated in the parade of honour at the Sokoto State Police Command.
The gesture was in appreciation of their neatness and the way they conducted the parade, it was gathered.
While addressing officers and men of the command, he said the Force was coming up with a scholarship scheme for children of fallen heroes and children of Inspectors, rank and files, who distinguish themselves.
“I am passionate about Inspectors and rank and files because they do virtually all the work of policing. I will touch you profoundly before I leave office,” the police helmsman pledged.
He promised to build 25,000 houses for retired and serving policemen in the country, adding, “ I will make sure you own a house to retire into after leaving service.”
“It is a social contract between me and you, so don’t do anything that will embarrass me or Nigeria. I expect your conduct and outlook to be good enough whenever you are on duty,” he added.
