A woman was crushed by a speeding car on Wednesday while her two-year-old baby was injured as they were crossing the Abuja-Zuba expressway.
It was learnt that the deceased, a newspaper vendor, simply identified as Mama Favor, was carrying the baby on her back as she dashed to across the ever-busy expressway when a hit-and-run driver knocked her down.
A witness said the baby was flung into a gutter by the roadside while the mother lay lifeless on the centre of the road.
The witness who faulted the deceased for not making use of the pedestrian bridge, said she was still lying unconscious on the road and about three other cars ran over her before her body was evacuated.
He said the driver ran away while the mangled corpse was moved away by NEMA officials and police officers who arrived the scene almost immediately, adding that the baby was rescued alive.
According to the witness, the deceased was immediately taken to the Kubwa General Hospital by officials of the FRSC, along with the driver.
Confirming the accident, the Dutse Divisional Police Officer, SP Hajiya Aisha Yusuf, said the baby was receiving treatment at the paediatric unit of the hospital, while both corpses had been deposited at the morgue.
