The Chairman of the organising committee of the recently held national conference of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has denied ever apologising to Nigerians for the party’s alleged misdeeds while in power.
Dokpesi described the report which was credited to him as having apologised on behalf of his party for fielding former President Goodluck Jonathan as false and misleading.
“I call on the party members nationwide to discountenance the misleading reports as the party has no apologies to offer to anyone for years of rule at the centre and majority of the states.
“What I said at the media briefing was that the PDP government was run by human beings who are not perfect and may have made mistakes. I cited the example of the party’s zoning agreement nationwide which buckled in the face of incumbents and went on to subvert the people’s choice in who represent them leading to defeats at the polls, I tendered an apology to PDP members nationwide for actions like that.
“Let me state emphatically and without any equivocation that I am not only an unrepentant admirer, supporter and die-hard follower of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, but indeed a party member whose support for the presidents produced by the PDP in its 16 years on the saddle is a self-evident truth and there for all to see.
“I am for emphasis, very proud of the achievements of former President Jonathan in many sectors of our national life and I am of the conviction that with time, Nigerians will see and pay accolades to a man who ruled the country of sincerity of purpose but who, owing to a combination of extraneous factors has been completely misunderstood.
“I am aware of the various efforts by APC government to undo the PDP and set it’s members against one another in order to pave way for a one- party state in Nigeria. This, like other similar evil machinations are day- dreams that will not see the light of day. The PDP can only but wax stronger being the only political party in Nigeria that is not a gathering of strange bed fellows like the APC whose lifespan is only a matter of expiration of its burrowed time,” he said.
Dokpesi said he was proud of the democratic gains recorded under the PDP governments at state and federal levels which included the independence of the judiciary and the stability the polity enjoyed until the advent of the insurgency of Boko Haram.
According to him, even the insecurity caused by insurgency is dying gradually as a result of efforts initiated by the last central administration.
