From dust we came and to dust we shall return. For the late management icon, Mr. Gamaliel Onosode, the journey to dust commenced this morning at the Goodnews Baptist Church, Surulere, where his body lay in state for friends and well-wishers to view and bid him farewell.
Bespectacled, dressed in dark suit, white shirt and black tie with the unmistakable dimpled knot, Onosode lay so deeply in a sleep from which he can only wake up on the Biblical Last Day.
As people stood around the silver casket to pay their last respect, he looked like he would suddenly stand up. And there was a sort of naughty but ghastly smile playing on his handsome face. Even in death, GOO maintains a dignified mien and a cool disposition.
Men and women from all walks of life are dropping by to pay their last respect and bid him a final farewell. And it seems the witches and wizards that caused the horrific traffic jams in the city lately are on recess in honor of a very good man.
A Mercedes Benz hearse is idling close by waiting to convey the body to the Murtala Mohammed Airport for a chartered flight to Warri en route his hometown, Ughelli.
There will be a service of songs in his compound tomorrow evening, while the burial service will commence at 11am on Friday, October 22. And that will be it. We will never see him again until we join him in Paradise, for those who lived an equally good life (chai!!!)
He's run his own race here on earth, and the entire world is unanimous in saying "there goeth a good man!"
Rest in Peace, Chairman of Chairmen!
