EFCC BOSS LAMORDE SUES SUN NEWSPAPER N1BN FOR LIBEL

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde has sued The Sun Publishing Company, owners of The Sun Newspaper, for allegedly publishing a false story about him, asking for N1 billion damages.
Specifically, Lamorde said that the story published by the newspaper that he was being investigated for embezzling N1 trillion, allegedly being money recovered by the EFCC from corrupt public officials was false.
In the suit which was filed at the Federal High Court Abuja on behalf of the EFCC chairman by Festus Keyamo, The Sun was alleged to have maliciously published a story on the front page of its October 8, 2015 edition, titled “N1TRN looted funds: Lamorde, EFCC boss, in soup."
In the statement of claim, the plaintiff averred that the allegations made by the defendant (The Sun) are untrue and actuated by malice with intent to malign and undermine the plaintiff’s reputation.
The plaintiff further stated that immediately after the publication was released, he received numerous telephone calls from professional colleagues, international donor agencies, multinational organisations, relations, friends and religious leaders expressing their utmost disgust and contempt at his alleged disgraceful, unpatriotic and sacrilegious conducts and questioned his integrity.
In the suit marked FCT/HC/M10045/15, Lamorde asked the court to award the sum of N1 billion against the defendants, as damages for the words published in the said story.
