Exactly 19 years after she was assassinated, Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, was on Thursday remembered by Nigerians for the role she played during the incarceration of her husband by the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha.
Kudirat Abiola, was assassinated on Tuesday, June 4, 1996, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a few years after her late husband won the presidential election that was later annulled.
Among those that remembered the late activist, were former military Governor of Lagos State and former Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd); her daughter, Hasfat Abiola and President, Women Arise, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin.
Also at the ceremony were factional leader of the O’odua People’s Congress, Gani Adams; Nollywood Actor, Ayo Badmus; Mrs. Ganiyat Fawehinmi and Deputy Secretary General, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Simeso Amachree, among many others.
Themed: ‘The Labour of Our Heroine,’ the remembrance ceremony which was held at MKO House in Ikeja, was organised by Women Arise and the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), an organisation founded by her daughter, Hafsat Abiola.
Remembering the late activist, Admiral Kanu described the late Kudirat Abiola as a symbol of emulation.
Also Odumakin said: “While her miserable killers faint alive, #KudiratAbiola shines even more in our hearts. The labour of our heroine has made us proud.”
Recapping what happened at the remembrance, Odumakin tweeting from @DrJoeOdumakin wrote, “Abdul Abiola, the last son, had premonition and wanted to avoid school to be with his mum on day she was assassinated.
“Jamiu Abiola, third child and second son of #KudiratAbiola says those who killed her have made her greater.
“Gani Adams is a staunch #June12 activist. He wants Federal Government to immortalise Kudirat Abiola.
Also speaking, Abiola Hasfat tweeting from @HafsatKIND wrote, “Remembering my gentle, kind mum today. 19 years on, Mum, I remain proud of you. | #kudirat abiola corner.”
