A cross section of Nasarawa State residents have responded to a promise by Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for automatic employment for any National Youth Service Corps member who gets married to an indigene of the state while on national assignment there.
In an apparent bid to engender national unity, Al-Makura during the swearing in of Batch A Corp Members on assignment in Nasarawa encouraged interstate marriages with a promise of advancing their engagement in Nasarawa with employment.
“I promise automatic employment to any NYSC Batch “A” member who marries an indigene in order to promote peaceful coexistence among the people of the state and other states of the country,” the governor had promised during the swearing ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Keffi.
But a section of residents in Nasarawa State believes that the governor’s promise was “superfluous” and capable of encouraging wrong motivation. Mr. Bala Adamu, a resident of Akwanga argued that “this shows that the governor lacks proper sense of priority and hence misplaces crucial issues to the mundane.”
Adamu rather advised the governor to encourage hard work and honesty in the state.
However, others are of the opinion that the governor’s promise was in the right direction “as this would encourage a sense one Nigeria and further engender national unity,” according to Dr. Yusuf Ondoma, a medical doctor in private practice in Nasarawa. He encouraged the governor to pursue national peace and unity.
A community leader in Awe also shared the governor’s sense as he advised people across Nigeria to intermarry so as to preserve unity and peaceful co-existence. The Maigari of Shaabu, Isah Angeh said: “I believe the governor was right in giving that promise as he shows his is a man of peace
