National coordinator of the Oodua
Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams, at the weekend, in Lagos, took a
swipe at the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC),
General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), describing him as an enemy of democracy.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos,
Otunba Adams said the APC standard bearer has never been a lover of democracy,
having toppled a democratically elected government in 1983, and vehemently
opposed the National Conference convergence, a platform to discuss the
socio-political and economic future of the country.
Going down memory lane, he said
if the retired general had not trampled the nascent democracy under his
jackboot, democracy would have thriven well today.
According to him, “General Buhari
is not the right leader Nigerians should vote for at this time because he never
believed in the National Conference ab initio and all the tenets of
democracy.”
The OPC leader, therefore, gave
reasons why Nigerians across board should vote for President Goodluck Jonathan
in the forthcoming presidential election, citing the convergence of the
National Conference as a veritable pointer for his argument.
According to him, “President
Goodluck Jonathan is a man of integrity who will never lie to Nigerians. He had
said it in several fora that he will implement all the recommendations of the
national conference which we believe is the best thing that has happened to
Nigeria in a long while and that’s why the Oodua Peoples Congress is throwing
its full weight behind his second term ambition.
“Yoruba leaders met and agreed
that we will only support the full implementation of the national conference
and he has agreed to that, meaning, we think alike”.
