The
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday announced the
extension of the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to
Sunday, 8th February 2015.
Before the
extension of the collection of the PVCS, the deadline expired January 31 2015.
According to
the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode idowu, in a statement,
"This supersedes the earlier deadline of Saturday, 31st January 2015, and
is intended to give registered voters yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity
to do so in readiness for the February 2015 general elections.
"INEC
hereby calls on duly registered persons not to delay in going to collect their
cards before the expiration of the new deadline.
"The
Commission reaffirms its determination to make the 2015 elections free, fair,
credible and peaceful; and urges all stakeholders, including voters, to spare
no effort in working towards the same objective." the statement from
INEC."
INEC had
last week said that it had distributed over 42.77 million Permanent Voter Cards
to eligible voters expected to vote in the February 14 and 28 Presidential and
National Assembly and Governorship elections.
The figure
of 4277339 represents 62.15 percent of the PVCS distributed. The total number
of registered voters for this month general election is put at over 68 million
eligible registered voters.
With the
distribution of more than 42.77 million PVCS, there is still outstanding of
more than 26 million PVCS yet to be distributed.
The
commission further said that it has distributed 145,000 card readers that are
expected to used in 119973 polling units.
