President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday declared that as a democratic country, Nigeria does not a lion as its leader and urged the electorate to vote wisely at the forthcoming presidential election.
He said the days where the people were hounded into detention and intimidated were gone good and pledged to continue to protect their rights through adherence to rule of law and constitutionalism in the governance of the country.President Jonathan gave the assurances yesterday in Ilorin, Kwara State during the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential campaign in the state.
He restated the determination of his administration to check all forms of electoral fraud from any political party in the February general elections. The President remarked that that the PDP government would not allow itself to be rigged out of power by any party in the elections.
President Jonathan commended the people for their large turnout for the rally, noting that he would not subscribe to governance by intimidation if re-elected.
The President said: “My message to the people of Kwara State specifically today (yesterday) is not all about what we have done or what we’ll even do per se, but to assure you that we’ll work with you and let Nigerians know they are free citizens. We don’t want a government where Nigerians will be governed by intimidation. We are committed to a government wherein every Nigerian will be free, where every young man and woman of 18 years old will be free.
“We don’t want to be bottled or have any fear of intimidation. We don’t encourage a situation where leaders intimidate followers, where people feel like they are in a zoo, with lions or leopards are moving freely and others going into hiding. Nigeria is not a zoological garden. Nigeria is a country governed by laws and people are free.
“Kwara is a PDP state. It’s just that our mandate was illegally taken away. We’ll surely get it back. Despite that all that, you have remained strong. We love you for that and we’ll continue to work with you. Kwara State is a peaceful state, a state of harmony where all Nigerians reside and do business and engage in other development activities. We thank you for the peaceful coexistence against insecurity we experience in some other parts of the country. We’ll continue to work together to make the state remain peaceful,” he said.
Jonathan further said that, “We’ll work with you to make agriculture turn you to billionaires through micro, small and medium scale agro-allied enterprises and to create jobs for others. We have intervened on water, power, rail transport, establishment and expansion of universities, road construction among others.
“This country belongs to the youths and you are the future leaders. That is what we are set out for: A government of young people. We also have a vibrant economy recognised by the Cable News Network, CNN two days ago, ranking us with two other countries where the economy will continue to boom. If CNN can say that who is that economist in Nigeria that can say what the world has seen will be seen differently. Our economy is the largest in Africa. All experts in both public and private sectors have been working to sustain that.”
Earlier, the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, said that Kwara is the only state with two governors, stressing that “one has constitutional functions while the other has the political power.”
He urged the people to vote massively for President Jonathan as well as Ajibola/Aluko guber ticket for peace, growth and development of the state.
At the second leg of the campaigns in Rwang Pam Stadium, Plateau State, President Jonathan and his team was received by a huge crowd.
He said that keeping Nigeria united is a great task for all citizens and pledged to continue to improve on the economy of the country if reelected.
The President said that, “We will continue to improve on the agriculture sector and better the lots of farmers in the country.”
As early as 7am, PDP supporters from the 17 local government areas were on ground to show solidarity for the President and waited till about 5pm when he arrived.
Jonathan also said PDP is the only party that can lead Nigeria forward.
“PDP is the democratic party that has the interest of the country at heart” he said.

So we need a clualess president that will say stealing is not corruption? This Jonathan does not have anything to tell Nigerians. He should just resign and stop further discredit ion of the presidency. He has apparently proven to be a failure. The simple truth is that we need change. For a president to bribe judicial workers to embark on strike because of his selfish political motive is the height of ineptitude and misgovernance . It is only in Nigeria that such thing is tolerated .
