This young man was gunned down by the same policemen paid to protect us.
This s the story as narrated by sports journalist, Godwin Enakhena.
Gruesome murder in broad day light
Citizen Adeniyi Asubiaro was a friend, a very good friend. Calm and collected, he will never hurt a fly, he smiles even when pushed to the fall. He was everyone's friend and servant.
He made sure I eat amala, gbegiri and ewedu, the popular Yoruba delicacy whenever I found myself on the island and in his office.
My dearest Niyi was cut down brutally in his prime by a trigger happy policeman on Wednesday, 19th November, 2014 during a birthday party organized by a friend of his younger sister, a few meters away from his house on Lagos Island.
Workaholic Niyi who was into Information Technology had closed for the day after a hard days work in the office and as usual, went home straight to his expectant wife, who is eight months pregnant with their first kid. Moments later, he decided to go greet his sisters friend at the party venue in what turned out to be a journey of no return. If only he had premonition of the fate that awaited him!
Life was snuffed out of our own dear Niyi by the Police right in front of his house. Helplessly, his family watched and could do nothing, the fear of the guns bought with tax payers monies was the reason.
What was Niyi's offence? Simple. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
As told by eye witnesses that included his parents, siblings and neighbors, Niyi left the venue of the party immediately he sensed danger, he heard the sound of gun shots, he wasn't a violent man. There was pandemonium as policemen invaded the party in 'search of trouble makers'. That was the story from the police. They said they got a distress call that hoodlums were fighting in that area.
In the ensuing commotion, everyone ran for dear life, including our beloved Niyi. He ran towards his gate which was locked, he ran to the next gate but right behind him were police officers who didn't hesitate to ascertain how harmless Niyi was before pumping hot bullets into his fragile body, he fell flat on his face calling for help that never came. He was dying...He was losing so much blood.
Help only came when the Police had left. Poor Niyi in a pool of his blood was rushed to the Island General Hospital where the normal practice is for the management to ask for Police report (from the family of a dying man), with non in sight, he was rejected. And citizen Niyi Asubiaro died, cut down in his prime, he was just 32 years old.
The police, according to Niyi's mum came next day asking to see his corpse to remove the bullets in his body. The answer was a CAPITAL NO.
Niyi, the perfect gentleman was buried on friday, 20th November, 2014 amidst wailing and gnashing of teeth by all who knew him,
My friend Niyi had great plans for his wife and his unborn kid, reason he rented a house in Agege, where he was to move to after the birth of his first child but fate...his office was in Simpson Street, a few minutes walk from his parents abode, he only went to Agege weekends.
Niyi my friend had great plans for Christmas...he didn't live long enough to fulfill his promise to dear mama...He took his mum off the streets where she hawked to take care of the family, he wanted her to enjoy the fruits of her labour but...
Niyi, may your killer never find rest...
Rest well, our beloved Niyi. You were a great guy. We all love you.
Nigerians, citizen Niyi MUST NOT DIE LIKE A CHICKEN, HE WASN'T ONE.
OVER TO YOU, THE NIGERIA POLICE.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA.
