The All Africa
Music Awards, AFRIMA, on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 held an entertaining
concert tagged 'Road to AFRIMA on Campus’ at the Indoor Sports Hall of the
University of Lagos which was targeted at communicating the vision and ideals
of AFRIMA to the vibrant youth generation in Nigeria, the awards host country.
Present at the
concert which also marked the launching of ‘Vote-Not-Fight-Campaign’, were big
names in the Nigeria music industry as well as AFRIMA Awards’ nominees and
upcoming artistes such as, 2face Idibia, Skales, Naeto C, Jaywon, Niyola, Zeez,
Dammy Krane, Queen Moda, Efa, Saeon, Joel, Seriki, Capital F.E.M.I, Tony One
Week and many more. The concert was anchored by foremost
Compere and Comedian in Africa, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st.
Thousands
of students adorned in their AFRIMA branded T-shirt attended the concert and
were excited to see their favourite artistes perform. Funmi Oguntade, an
undergraduate of the Faculty of Law said: “I’m glad to have witnessed such a
great concert as this and I look forward to the AFRIMA Music Village and the
Award Ceremony in November 4-7 and November 9 because I have heard that popular
music stars in Africa and abroad will come”. Victor Okonkwo, another University
of Lagos student at the concert expressed gratitude to AFRIMA for helping them
relieve the tension of academic work through entertainment. “This is best thing that has ever happened to
UNILAG and we are honoured that AFRIMA is holding the maiden edition of the
‘Road to AFRIMA’ on campus in this great institution”. The 300-level Economics
student added further that, “Personally, I’m a bookworm and anytime I have
opportunity for quality entertainment as AFRIMA provided, I jump on it. I hope
to attend their events in November, particularly the Africa Music Summit where
a lot of discussion will go on about the African music industry”.
The Executive
Producer, AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada on behalf of the International Committee of
AFRIMA expressed appreciation to artistes and students for showing up for the
event and for support and commitment towards AFRIMA events.
Voting
for winners continues in the 32 categories of the award till November 4, 2014.
The main award ceremony comes up on Sunday, November 9 in Lagos, Nigeria. It
will be preceded by the AFRIMA Music Village between November 4 and 7; a four
day festival of non-stop music and exhibition from African countries and
performances by African artistes. This is followed by the African Music Summit,
November 6-7, with the theme “Reviving the Business of Music in Africa".
The two-day conference will be a platform for the music industry stakeholders
to engage and deliberate on how the industry can be nurtured and be a major
contributor to national and continental economies.
