Information Ministry Staff Protest,Describe Labaran Maku As An Absolute Failure

As the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, left office on Monday, personnel of the ministry staged a protest, blocking the entrance to the Radio House over alleged maladministration during his tenure.
It took the intervention of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Folashade Yemi-Esan, to get the staff into a dialogue after hours of protest.
...
One of the members of staff, who expressed dissatisfaction with the minister and the permanent secretary during the truce meeting, accused the duo of being insensitive to their plight.
“I don’t admire both of you - minister and permanent secretary. Sometimes you see your staff loitering at the ground floor because the elevators meant for us are bad, and you would just move on without asking questions because the elevator meant for you is functioning,” he said.
The staff, among other issues, also decried the inability of the minister to resuscitate the moribund federal government press, and lack of transparency in the selection of staff for training.
“We were finding faults with Prof. Dora Akunyili as minister and we prayed that you become the minister but when God answered our prayer, you behaved as if you don’t like us. If you had done what you were supposed to do, your exit would have been glorious,” they said.
The staff who turned out in large numbers, expressed anger over poor working conditions, non-payment of repatriation allowance, non-payment of promotion arrears and inadequate training for staff.
Chairman, Association of Civil Service of Nigeria, Ministry of Information chapter (ASCSN), Adam Oghola, during the protest, said the workers were hungry due to their inability to access some allowances, adding that promotions had been pending.
