As
a major step towards addressing the recurrent cases of cattle rustling and
other associated crimes as witnessed in some parts of the country, the
Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Suleiman Abba, CFR,
NPM, NPOM, mni, has set up ‘The Nigeria Police Task Force on
Cattle Rustling and Associated Crimes’.
The
Task Force, which has an Assistant Commissioner of Police as its Commanding
Officer, will have Tactical Units at each of the six geo-political zones of the
country and is saddled with pre-emptive intelligence gathering,
anti-cattle-rustling and allied crimes patrols cum operations as well as the
investigation and possible prosecution of reported incidents of cattle
rustling.
It
is expected that the effective functioning of this new Task Force will whittle
down the menace of cattle rustlers, which has adversely led to untold
ethno-religious and communal conflicts in the affected areas.
The
IGP therefore enjoins the citizenry to cooperate with the Police in their
determination to provide community safety and security in all parts of the
country.
Meanwhile the Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Suleiman Abba CFR, NPM,
NPOM, mni in his resolved to bring to an end, the pervasive communal
clashes that have plaque different parts of the nation has today set up the “Nigeria
Police Committee on Prevention and Management of Communal Clashes”.The Ag
IGP made the announcement during a working visit to Kaduna state today.
The Committee is co-chaired by
four Assistant Inspectors General of Police and has its terms of reference
among others as follows:
i. To encourage and
facilitate dialogue among warring parties.
ii. Conduct mediation meetings with
aggrieved parties with a bid to peacefully
resolving declared differences.
iii. Development
and application of early warning mechanisms and systems of threats of communal
clashes
iv. Mediation and application of
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services to avert conciliate and or
resolve observed/reported communal disputes before they escalate.
The committee has twelve other
members drawn from the six geo-political zones of the Country.
