The police in Benin City, Edo State, on Friday arraigned five members of
state House of Assembly in an Oredo chief magistrates’ court for allegedly
assaulting another member of the House, Mr. Razaq Momoh.
The accused are the Majority Leader, Mr Philip Shaibu (APC-Etsako
West 2), Sunday Aghedo (APC-Ovia South-West), Eboise Emmanuel, Promise Ogiso
and Ernest Arasomwan.
The prosecutor, Samuel Ogah, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, had
told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 7 at
Legislators’ Quarters, Benin.
Ogah said they assaulted and caused grievous harm to Momoh in
contravention of sections 516 and 355 of the Criminal Code.
The accused, however, denied committing the offence.
The magistrate, Mr Peter Edo-Asemota, granted the accused bail on self
recognition in the sum of N200, 000 each with a surety in like sum.
He said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to October 29.
