A diploma student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Kufre
Anwana, was yesterday caught with two improvised explosive devices
(IEDS) at the male hostel of the school.
It was gathered that some students had alerted the operatives of Peace
on Campus Initiative (PCI) about a bag containing the IEDs which were in
custody of the suspect.
Operatives of PCI were said to have trailed the suspect to his hostel
where it was discovered that the suspected bomber was in possession of IEDs
which were concealed in a bag.
The Anti-bomb squad of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Ikot
AkpanAbia, Uyo, which was drafted to the scene ascertain situation, on
discovering the IEDs, arrested the suspect.
The squad, according to eyewitnesses, detonated the two IEDs, even as
they conducted a search round the hostel.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State
Command, DSP Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident.
Dickson noted that the explosives were homemade devices, which could
have been invented by any of the science students in the university.
He added that the police would get to the roots of the matter while,
urging students and parents not to entertain any fear about possible breakdown
of law and order in the university community.
