Redeemed Church Pastor Allowed To Die At LUTH Over Suspicion Of Ebola

A Redeemed Church Parish Pastor, Solomon Olayanju died yesterday from alleged negligence by the management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, due to suspicion of Ebola Virus Disease, (EVD).
This will make it the second death from negligence occurring at LUTH this week.
The first death, that of a 19 year old student of Law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria who was brought in by Port Health authorities on Monday was sa...id to have died on Tuesday due to lack of attendance.
His corpse was later confirmed to be Ebola negative. The latest, Pastor Olayanju, who is the parish pastor at Adulam area zone 3 Province 26, Ilasa Lagos, was referred from a private hospital after showing high temperature.
He was immediately taken to the spillover ward of the accident and emergency A&E unit which serves as the EVD isolation unit for suspected cases.
A colleague of the deceased, Pastor Kehinde Bello told National Mirror that the consultant handling the case, Dr. Akodu refuse to attend to the deceased since Monday that he was admitted.
According to him, the nurses refused to take out blood samples and no test was carried out.
“It was on Wednesday, after the tests carry out confirmed that the young man who died on Tuesday, at the same ward was free from Ebola, that the management realised their mistake.
“It was then that the nurses started attending to him, after we protested and threaten to take him away” he said. But Pastor Olayanju died yesterday morning before any serious medical treatment could be given to him.”
Another colleague of the deceased, Pastor Jacob, told National Mirror that one of the nurses at the ward bathed the deceased corpse yesterday morning.
This he said proves that the decease did not die from Ebola as claimed.
His words: “If the management actually suspects Ebola, we would not even be allowed into the ward, and the nurse will not attempt to bath the corpse. This is all a simple case of negligence”.
In their demand for clarification, Pastor Jacob said the family had taken the case to the Chief Medical Director LUTH, Prof. Akin Osibogun, who merely apologised and asked them to make arrangement to carry the corpse.
Reacting to the development, in a telephone interview, Prof. Osibogun told National Mirror that the matter was still being investigated and appropriate measure will be taken following the outcome of the investigation. He added that the hospital is also maintaining high suspicious index in other to prevent infection.
