The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that the sentence handed
down to 12 soldiers for mutiny could sow the seed of major security problem in
the armed forces.
Speaking in Abuja, the acting president of the congress, Comrade Promise
Adewusi, said the brutal execution of the soldiers will not restore discipline
by fiat in the military.
According to him, execution of the soldiers would not foster discipline,
adding that “rather, it could sow the seed of a major security problem in the
armed forces.”
He advised that in confronting the current security challenges, it was
important that commanders earned the confidence of their troops and vice versa.
The NLC described the conviction of the soldiers as harsh, insensitive
and unacceptable, stressing that the circumstances that led to the mutiny
had been in the open.
“However, if the court martial functioned as a mechanical clock, we
expect the military council or the appropriate authority, whose responsibility
it is to review sentences of this nature, to commute this sentence to a more
tolerable one,” he said.
