The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive
of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi has described the sudden death
of the former Vice Chairman of the Sun Newspaper, Dimgba Igwe as a
colossal loss of a media veteran and intellectual icon to the nation’s
journalistic profession.
Reacting to the demise of the late
Dimgba in a condolence message, the FRSC Corps frowned at the circumstances
which led to the death of a “distinguished Nigerian who served the journalism
profession with zeal, candour, forthrightness and integrity”, adding that “his
demise has left behind legacies, which will serve as template and reference
point for present and future generation of the Nigerian media”.
Still speaking on his death which
according to media reports and eye witness account, was caused by a hit-and-run
driver in a Toyota Corrolla vehicle, Oyeyemi frowned of the reckless conduct of
the supposed driver as alleged and regretted that even in the face of the
FRSC’s sustained drive to address the menace of reckless driving in the
country, there are still recalcitrant drivers with penchant for contravening
traffic rules and regulations.
Furthermore,
he recalled the Corps’ initiative to revamp the National Uniform Licensing
Scheme through an upgrade of its database with various capabilities that allows
seamless on-line verification of information bordering on vehicle number plates
and driver’s license thus creating a credible tool to regulate driver behaviour
on our roads.
According to him, “much as the Corps
has directed the Lagos State Sector Commander to commence investigations to
unravel the identity of the hit-and-run driver, we will most appreciate
relevant information from those who witnessed the fatal crash, on other details
of the vehicle such as the colour and number plate to enable us get to the root
of this unfortunate matter” he said.
While commiserating with the management
and staff of Sun Newspapers, the FRSC Corps Marshal also prayed to God to give
his immediate family, the fortitude to bear this colossal loss which has
not only dealt a great blow to the journalistic profession but to the nation.
It will be recalled from media reports that the late Dimgba Igwe was
jogging in the early hours of last Saturday close to his house when a speeding
driver, knocked him down and disappeared without stopping
