The
Federal Road Safety Commission has advised motorists and transporters
nationwide, against overloading their vehicles with passengers, most especially
now there is an outbreak of the Ebola disease in some parts of the federation.
This formed part statement made by the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi , when he gave the advice in an interview with newsmen after receiving the National Executive Committee, Zonal Officers and State Chairmen of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)
According to him, “If the vehicles are overloaded, the transmission of the virus can be much faster, overloading is traffic offence but now something – Ebola, has brought it to front burner”.
“Much as we are apprehensive about the outbreak in Nigeria and commend the robust efforts by the federal government to contain its spread, it will also provide a subtle check on overloading of vehicles which has remained a major concern to us and is also assisting us to ensure that our mandate is properly executed”.
``I know that passengers will further resist it – overloading,’’ Oyeyemi said.
The Corps Marshal also called on the transport union to sensitise its members on the consequences of overloading which at present, pose a two-pronged challenges as traffic hazards and facilitates the spread of the disease.

Oyeyemi
also recalled that with the Ember months season around the corner, the FRSC
will need the usual support of the NURTW to ensure reduction of road traffic
crashes through strict compliance with traffic regulations.

Alhaji Najeem Yasin, the national President of NURTW, said the union was
already organising a programme nationwide to sensitise its members about the
Ebola Virus Disease, adding that members of the union had been directed not to
overload their vehicles as part of measure to check the spread of the disease.
Earlier, the NURTW President, who led the national and state executives of the union on courtesy visit to the Corps Marshal, congratulated him on his appointment.
Yasin said that the appointment of Oyeyemi, was a clear departure from the past when FRSC Chief Executives were appointed from outside the system. He commended the federal government for this initiative which would ensure stability in running the FRSC affairs.
He urged the Corps Marshal to take measures to discourage underage driving, speeding, drunk driving, non use of seat belt, as well as use of phone while driving

Also speaking, the Board Chairman of
the FRSC, Chief Felix Chukwu commended the NURTW for the solidarity visit and
urged them to remain steadfast in supporting the FRSC numerous initiatives
towards enthroning safer road use in the country. He also implored the FRSC
management to forge closer ties with the transport union in order to engender
sound road culture among commercial drivers in Nigeria.
