Ebola:FRSC Distributes Personal Protective Kits To Officers

In line with  on-going proactive measures been taken nationwide to combat the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), the management of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has provided necessary protective tools to shield  its officers and men against the raging Ebola Virus.
This formed part of disclosures made by the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Boboye Oyeyemi at the Strategic session with Commanding Officers held at the COMACE Training Hall of the agency in Abuja.
He said such protective tools as sanitizers, gloves, gabs, nose guards, clinic gowns and everything required for the protection of the agency’s personnel have been provided, adding that the move became necessary as the officers are constantly in contact with other people in the course of their operations.
“As a public-facing government agency, the Corps’ operatives are in constant contact with victims of road crashes in the course of rescue activities and also offer medical services to members of the public at our road side clinic located along strategic routes of the highways, hence the need to make these provisions in order to safe guard our personnel from unforeseen circumstances tied to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)” he said.
The FRSC boss also stated the as the countdown to the end of 2014 begins, there was need to appraise and strengthen the policies of the Corps to achieve better results hence the training and strategic session. He added that the strategic session provides a rare platform to evaluate the Corps’ projections, activities and possible re-alignment in order to achieve set goals for the year under review.
“We are looking to further strengthen our policies that we have been working on. And as we are moving towards the end of the year, there is need for us to appraise the level of patrol operations and the crashes to be able to take important policy decisions so as to move forward to achieve the goals set for the year. And in addition, we are aware of the risk involved of our personnel both in office and especially during rescue operations on the highway. The essence of this is safeguarding our personnel against contacting the Ebola virus while on duty. After the training, it behoves on the management to provide the necessary tools by the giving them the sanitizers, the gloves, the gabs, everything required. And also our clinics especially the roadside clinics we have already provided protective gabs for them so that when they have contact with members of the public they are protect, because during rescue operations, during removal of obstructions we do
have contacts with other people so we must ensure that we protect our personnel which is critical. And I must commend government’s efforts that we have been able to bring this under control so far” he said.
He further commended President, Goodluck Jonathan for taking the initiative to appoint the Chief executive from within the agency instead of outsourcing the position, noting that the President’s decision highlighted some of the mile stone accomplishments of the Corps, especially under the immediate out-gone Corps Marshal and Chief Executive.
Meanwhile the Corps has concluded plans to commence the construction of 20,000 housing units across the country under a housing scheme tagged “Vision 20,000 housing project,” as part of measures to engender improved service delivery.
Oyeyemi reiterated that “the housing initiative is in partial fulfilment of the resolve of the Corps’ present management to place staff welfare on the front burner in order to provide the required incentive for FRSC operatives to deliver on set goals of safer roads and fuller lives in the country”
Oyeyemi emphasized that the focus of the housing scheme will be on “one man one house” residential arrangement to effectively provide affordable houses for the Corps’ present staff strength of 20,000 in collaboration with the Federal Mortgage bank and other major stakeholders in the housing and financial sectors.
He also said “under the programme, 70% of the houses have been earmarked for junior staff of the Corps with a numerical strength of 15,000 while officers account for 5,000 of the staff strength. Realizing that housing remains a critical component for human development, we will vigorously pursue the vision 20,000 housing project to provide succour for our staff during and after their service” he said. He added that FRSC management will subsidize the equity contribution of junior staff towards the scheme to make the payment affordable.
