Fourteen lawmakers of the Ebonyi
State House of Assembly were, on Tuesday, arrested and quizzed by operatives of
the state police command, over alleged burglary and forcefully breaking into
the assembly complex on July 21.
The arrest, according to the
state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chris Anyanwu, followed a warrant
of arrest issued by an Abakaliki magistrate, accusing the lawmakers of
unlawfully and forcefully gaining entrance into the assembly chambers
complex and forgery of the signatures of three of their members.
The lawmakers were later released
after making statements individually to the police, as they were grilled at the
State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
They were arrested at the gate of
the state high court, after witnessing court proceedings in a case they
instituted, challenging the leadership of the assembly.
The police PPRO said
investigations into the matter had commenced.
Speaking on behalf of the 14
lawmakers, the minotity leader, Honourable Enyi C Enyi, debunked the allegation
of burglary and forgery of signatures of some members, stating that no amount
of intimidation would deter them from pursuing their case to a logical
conclusion.
In a related development, a
Federal High Court siting in Abakaliki, on Tuesday, adjourned hearing till
September 1, in a suit instituted by 14 lawmakers of the assembly, challenging
the leadership.
