The Sultan
of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday decried the way
northerners were being allegedly tagged as terrorists and asked to carry
identity cards in some parts of the country, describing such harassment as sad
and unfortunate.
He also advised the new Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, to lead his subjects in line with Islamic tenets by being fair and just to his subjects.
Speaking
while receiving the new Emir of Gombe in his palace in Sokoto, the monarch
noted with dismay the way Muslims and northerners were being tagged as
fundamentalists, saying such attitude would not augur well for the unity of the
country.
He wondered
why some northerners were being asked to carry identity cards in some parts of
the country which negates their right as citizens of Nigeria.
“It is
indeed sad that some northerners are being suspected as terrorists and asked to
move around with identity cards in some parts of the country, despite being
bonafide citizens of Nigeria.
“We should not allow our people to be harassed and maltreated. This is an infringement on their individual rights as citizens and should not be so.

“As leaders,
it is our responsibility to defend the rights of our people wherever they find
themselves in Nigeria and we will not waiver in doing that,” the Sultan
averred.
The monarch expressed concern over the myriad of challenges bedeviling the North and called for concerted efforts to tackle the ugly trend.

the new Emir of Gombe to carry along his people and be fair to them in all his
dealings.
According to him, the Sokoto Caliphate was established on truth, equity and social justice, hence the need for the Emir to be just to all irrespective of their status in the society.
He said it was only God that gives power to whoever He wishes and that those who were bestowed with leadership should lead with the fear of God.

The monarch

as such, should carry out his duties in accordance with Islamic injunction.

What about all the killings of innocent people, can the emir not speak out for them? Haba !!! am so ashamed to call myself a Nigerian (yes l live in the diaspora) The emir should speak to the people to flush out those who are working with BH, report those terrorizing the Christians in the north and burning churches, there are Muslims all over the other parts of Nigeria and they are not being persecuted or being made to convert by force? why must it be different in the North and now the emir is saying his people is being harassed because they are required to carry ID.
