Five people
were between Friday night and early Saturday feared dead as hoodlums clashed
with policemen at Ajegunle area of Ikorodu Expressway in Lagos State
The
police in the state, however, denied that anybody was shot by policemen from
the command and that 23 members of the hoodlums had been arrested
The crisis
created serious confusion and traffic gridlock along Ikorodu Road as the
hoodlums blocked the expressway on Saturday morning, before they were dispersed
by anti-riot policemen
It was gathered that the irate hoodlums were protesting the death of two of
their colleagues, who were reportedly shot dead by policemen on Friday
night
They claimed
that a team of policemen had raided a suspected criminal hideout around
Ajegunle River and were chasing some of the hoodlums when they opened fire on
them.
A resident of
Majidun area, who simply identified himself as Dapo, said that there was heavy gunshots by policemen to dispense the hoodlums on
Saturday morning
He said “ we
heard that some of the boys were smoking Indian hemp near the river , when
policemen tried to the and the all ran into different directions “

continued that the policemen chased them until they jumped into the lagoon and
two of them died but the policemen did not wait again . They left them there
and went away
It was however gathered that the hoodlums accused the police of shooting their
colleagues , prompting their mobilization on Saturday morning and blocked the
expressway
The hoodlums
vandalsed about four commercial vehicles as they threw stones , broken bottles
and other objects on the expressway, creating serious panic among motorists .
The image
maker in charge of the state police command , Ngozi Braide , while
speaking on the incident denied that anybody was shot in the Friday night raiding
by policemen from Owode Onirin police station
Braide also
confirmed that two members of the hoodlums jumped not the lagoon but nobody had
recovered their corpses as at Saturday evening
She also
confirmed that twenty three of the hoodlums were arrested for taking the law
into their hands and that the police had begun investigations into the
incident.
