Police Foils Attempt To Bomb College In Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has foiled a suicide bomb attack on Government Day Secondary School Pilot, located within Gombe metropolis.

The incident happened around 10:45 am local time, when graduating secondary school students were writing their final Mathematics paper, for the National Examinations Council NECO.


Addressing newsmen in his office, the state Police Commissioner, Kudu Nma said the attack would have been devastating, as it was planned to hit targets within 800 square meters radius.

Places targeted includes a market, the state office of NECO and the Gombe Area Command of the Nigeria Police located opposite the schools.

Nma said the command received a distressed call from some good citizens and acted swiftly to avoid the calamity.

“Monday July 7 is yet another day for joy. When we were alerted, I immediately dispatched a team of anti bomb experts and other key officers. On reaching the scene, it was discovered that a Honda Odyssey vehicle packed with laden explosives had already rammed into the fence of the school, where NECO examination was going on. If not because of the timely intervention of the Police, the devastation would have been enormous on pupils and students, as well as property 800 meters within the area. The casualty would have been high,” Nma explained.

He called on the public to continue to assist with useful information, to aid the Police in doing their job.

“I want to call on the general public to be aware of the desperation of these suicide bombers and to assist us with useful information in unveiling those people who are behind the construction of these deadly weapons. Let’s continue to be very prayerful, as no information is insignificant to tell us exactly what is happening in Gombe state so that we can together save the statem,” Nma pleaded.

The Police Commissioner sued for more prayers for God to save the state and entire nation from wicked people who do not mean well for the country.

Recovered items

Spokesperson for the Command, Deputy Superintendent Fwaje Atajiri listed the weapons recovered from the vehicle used for the attack.

They are; three long fabricated gas cylinders of improvised explosive devices IEDs, two short fabricated cylinders of IEDs, three military tool boxes fabricated into IEDs, two military ammunition boxes fabricated into IEDs and a silver vacuum flask, also fabricated into IED among others.

The area had been cordoned off and the suicide bomber, who was immediately arrested, is helping the Police in their investigation.
