The Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has faulted
media reports that he has resigned to pursue his governorship ambition in 2015.
He said the rumour was the handiwork of his political opponents who were not
comfortable with his rising profile as the leader of the Peoples Democratic
Party in Rivers State.
A statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by his Special Assistant (Special
Duties), Mr. Lambert Oparah, stated that contrary to insinuations, Wike “enjoys
the confidence of President Goodluck Jonathan.”
He said, “The news report of the purported resignation by the Minister
of State for Education, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, was planted by his political
opponents who are afraid of his rising profile as a PDP leader in Rivers State.
“Wike enjoys the confidence of Mr. President and he is doing his job
creditably well. Just a few days ago, Wike made public the education sector
Transformation Agenda under President Goodluck Jonathan which was well
acclaimed by all.
“Wike is busy working hard in the Federal Ministry of Education to
ensure the success of Mr. President’s Transformation Agenda in the education
sector. It is true that the people of Rivers State have been calling on him to
come and rescue them from the clutches of tyranny but his priority now is to
ensure that Mr. President succeeds in his Transformation Agenda and at the
appropriate time he will make his intention known.”
“There are people who are not comfortable with the rising profile of the
minister as the man to beat and have therefore resorted to cheap blackmail with
intent to cause disaffection.”
