Two leaders of Northern community in the Southern region, who were
arrested when they went to enquire about the arrest of 486 traders in Abia
State, have been released.
Speaking on the issue, Professor Muhammed Tabiu, a member of the Joint
Civil Society Front of Northern Nigeria ( JOCSOF) said Sarki Malamai, Alhaji
Haliru Imam, and Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim, chairman of the South-South zone
chapter of Miyetti Allah, were released on Wednesday evening by the State
Security Service (SSS).
JOCSOF had on Tuesday in Kano raised alarm over the continued detention of the two community leaders.
Meanwhile, the Concerned Arewa Citizens(CAC) , the Northern group that sponsored bills for the registration of Southerners resident in the North, yesterday announced withdrawal of the bills.
The group had submitted the bills to the Kano and Kaduna States Houses of Assembly for the registration of Southerners resident in the North.
President of the group, Audu Bulama Bukarti, who announced the withdrawal after a meeting with the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 1,Kano, said they took the decision in view of the directive by the federal government that state governors should stop registration of Northerners.
“We do not have interest in pursuing the bills again. We firmly believe in the Nigeria project. The bill was a child of necessity and circumstance; it was as a result of the humiliation of Northerners in the South. Northerners were treated as second class citizens and the government did nothing about it. After the bills were submitted, the government met over it. We have decided to put the action on hold. Nobody forced or intimidated us to do so, we did it on our own,” he said.
