THE expectations of Nigerians that the strike embarked upon by doctors
under the aegis of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) might be called off today
have been dashed.
National President, NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe, said there was no agreement
by the association to call off the seven-day strike today.
He, however, said all branches of the asociation had been directed to
commence emergency medical services in all hospitals.
Speaking on the issue, Oyo State NMA chairman, Professor
Adefolarin Malomo, said the probability of the strike being called off today
was slim, as the meeting to decide this would hold today.
According to him, “nobody can say categorically what is going to happen
until the end of the meeting of the body on Monday (today).”
A statement made available to the media by the Minister of Health,
Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, had earlier said the strike was expected to be
called off today, after the association must have held its emergency delegates’
meeting.
The minister had claimed that almost all the issues raised in the
demands of the doctors had been addressed, adding that government was not
unaware of the hardship that the strike action had imposed on Nigerians.
