A case of love-gone-sour turned tragic when the younger brother of
23-year-old Blessing Ede and his friends allegedly stabbed her husband, Isaac
Ede, 36, in the wake of an argument over a baby-walker.
The chain of
events that led to the tragic end of Isaac began on Christmas Day, December 25,
2013 when he sent his wife to her parents in Uvuru, Imo State with the clear
instruction that she should remain there and wait for his message on when to
return to Port Harcourt. Isaac’s decision to send the wife to her village was
preceded by a quarrel between them.
For over three
months, as Sunday Sun learnt from the Rivers State Commissioner of
Police, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, Blessing, who is six months pregnant with the
second child of the couple remained with her parents until April 14, 2014, when
Isaac spoke with her on the phone and told her to come back to Port Harcourt to
pack her belongings out of his house.
On May 15,
2014, she bowed to her husband’s wish and came with her younger brother,
Emmanuel Anuforo and two of his friends, who were to assist her in moving her
belongings out the Isaac’s house.
According to
the Police Commissioner, the trio of Anuforo and his two friends, like people
with an ungodly agenda, stormed the deceased’s home around 11.00pm.
“When they
approached the house, they raised the volume of the music being played inside
the car they came with to disturb the neighbourhood,” Ogunsakin said.
He added:
“Isaac opened the door for them. The wife started to pack her belongings. At a
point, she wanted to take along the baby-walker. An argument ensued between the
couple. In the heat of the argument, the wife’s younger brother, Emmanuel and
his two friends attacked the husband and stabbed him in the stomach with a
sharp broken bottle and he died.”
Probably
alarmed by the hideous act, Emmanuel and his friends bolted from the scene,
abandoning Blessing, who was promptly arrested by policemen from the State
Criminal Investigation Department of the Rivers State Police Command as
neighbours raised the alarm.
At the
headquarters of the police command, where she is being held for interrogation,
Blessing acknowledged to Sunday Sun in an interview that really she had
had a quarrel with her late husband and said: “I had a misunderstanding with my
husband and he said I should go to my village to see my parents in Imo State.
He told me that until he called me to come to Port Harcourt I should not leave
the village. I expected his call until April 2014 but I didn’t hear from him
until May 2014 and I returned to Port Harcourt. I called my younger brother,
Emmanuel and his two friends to assist me to pack my things. As we were packing
my things, my husband said that I should not take the baby-walker. An argument
started between us. Then my younger brother and his friends took broken bottle
and stabbed my husband and he died in the process.”
Continuing,
Blessing said: “I didn’t send my brother Emmanuel and his two friends to kill
my husband. It was the devil. We have been married for two years. I have one
child for him and right now I am six months pregnant. I cannot explain what led
to the death of my husband. It was impatience that led to it. I want the family
of my husband to forgive me for what I have done. With my six months pregnancy
I will suffer if I am sent to prison for murder.”
Given further
insight to the soured state of the marriage of Isaac and Blessing based on the
findings of detectives investigating the matter, Ogunsakin described the wife
as a troublemaker.
His words: “She
is stubborn; it was what prompted the husband to send her to her parents house
in the village in Imo State. We learnt that whenever she and her husband had
misunderstanding he would sleep inside his car instead of beating her.
Elder brother
of the deceased, Kenneth Ede who is naturally traumatized by Isaac’s death has
asked the police to hasten their investigation and charge Blessing to court.
While the deceased’s family waits for the day Blessing would appear in court,
the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID, Mr. Abbey Agyole
disclosed that Emmanuel and his two friends remain at large.
