Barring any last minute change, the Osun State Resident Electoral
Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Toyin Akeju, will this week proceed on leave
ahead of the state governorsip election slated for August 9, 2014.
A reliable source at the INEC office in Oshogbo, Osun State, said that the REC in Kogi State,Mr Segun Agbaje, is to take charge in
the state from this week .
The decision was taken last week during the routine meeting of the
National Chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, with the 36
states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), RECs which was attended by the
National Electoral Commissioners.
According to the source,”the change is overdue and as the Commission is
preparing to deliver a free and fair election in Osun as was done in
Ekiti State, there is nothing new about it. The man in question is going on his
annual leave and there should be no vacuum.”
A High Court had ruled that the state REC should be removed having
been linked with a national leader of now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria
(ACN), but the Commission had refused to carry out the ruling, saying that it
would not act on mere rumour.
Though Sunday Tribune could not reach the Chief Press Secretary,
to the national chairman of the Commission, Mr Kayode Idowu, one of the
national Commissioners of the Commission confirmed the development, saying that
they wanted to give Nigeria the best and nothing more. Osun REC is only going
on leave,” he confirmed.
