The Imo State
Police Command has recovered a stolen baby girl, Febechukwu Egwuchukwu at St.
Gregory Catholic Church, Amaigbo in Nwigele Local Government Area of the
state when the suspects took her for dedication.
It was gathered
that immediately the suspects sighted the presence of the police they
quickly abandoned the baby and fled the church.
The state
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmajid Ali said that the
police recovered the baby following a tip off from the public. His men had
stormed the church in the middle of the dedication ceremony.
CP Ali
explained that the mother of the child, one Mrs. Precious Egwuchukwu had gone
for a church vigil at Nnampi Oru West Local Government Area of the state with
her one-year old baby girl. In the course of the vigil, two armed men stormed
the church on a motorcycle and forcefully snatched the baby away.
Speaking with reporters, the mother of the child said: “I am very happy over the recovery
of my daughter, Febechukwu. I went to a vigil on March 28, 2014. After
the prayer session, I laid my one -year old baby on the ground
with other children. I was then going to the
toilet when suddenly I saw two armed men who stormed the
church on a motorcycle and forcefully snatch the baby away.”
Mrs.
Egwuchukwu then went to Oru Police Station to lodge complaint over the
missing girl. “It was a terrible experience in my life. I started praying to
God that one day I will see my child.
“I got
information from the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ali who sent for me. When I
got there, he asked me to check if one of the recovered children was mine. When
I got there, it was my child that they recovered on April 28, 2014,” she
explained with joy.
The police
commissioner further explained that the police were able to recover the stolen
child because the kingpin of the kidnap gang had been arrested and in police
custody.
He explained
that the police were on the trail of the other suspects.
